London Gypsy Orchestra - Balkan Organ Carnival

A unique concert celebrating the newly restored organ at St John’s, with traditional music from Eastern Europe, and the premiere of a new piece by the critically-acclaimed violinist Gundula Gruen.

Join the St John’s Church Organ on a musical journey to the Balkans!
The Concert will present innovative arrangements of music from Eastern Europe which have been arranged for the unique line-up of Church Organ, Gypsy Orchestra and Steel Pan. It will feature the premier of a new piece by the orchestra’s leader, Gundula Gruen: “One Day in Grunistan” tells the story of one day in an invented country, an imaginary place of colour and creativity.

The London Gypsy Orchestra brings together 45 musicians of all backgrounds and nationalities to perform vibrant, passionate and energetic music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The largest ensemble of its kind in Western Europe, the London Gypsy Orchestra was established in 2005 by violinist Gundula Gruen, who continues to be director and soloist. She leads the group in creating fresh and surprising arrangements of time-honoured melodies, performed on both traditional and classical instruments.
Organist:
Paul Ayres is a composer, arranger, choral conductor, and musical director. As an organist he has given recitals all over the world, featuring mainstream classical repertoire plus transcriptions of Happy Hardcore, Trance, and 60s & 70s pop.
Steel Pan Soloist:
Jenny Gilberg is one of the UK’s top Steel pan soloists, and winner of the 2008 BAS UK Pan solo competition. Based in Newcastle, she is a classically trained musician and established steel pan tutor, performing in many national and international events.
